Turkish Hazelnut Update

As many of you know, Turkey is the largest supplier of hazelnuts in the world. Turkey represents roughly 75% of the world’s production of hazelnuts. Turkey is also the world’s largest hazelnut exporter. It ships more than 245,000 tons to various parts of the world. European countries remain Turkey’s top export destination, buying more than 75% of the country’s crop; approximately 185,000 tons. This information is based on the first 10 months of the export season.

From September 2017 to August 2018, Turkey exported nearly 287,000 tons of hazelnuts.

Turkey has two categories for its hazelnuts: Giresun and Levant. Giresun represents its premium quality Turkish hazelnuts. The Levant category is typically priced lower than the Giresun hazelnuts. Levant hazelnuts are named after the areas of the country from which they are grown. The largest difference between the two hazelnut types is fat percentage, with Giresun having a richer fat content and therefore receiving a slightly higher price.

Unlike hazelnuts grown in Oregon, which are variety specific, Turkey bases it hazelnuts on the fat content of the nut.
